O P E N S O C I E T Y I N S T I T U T E I was incredibly fortunate to have been asked by Dr. Kathleen M. Foley, Director, Palliative Care Initiative, Open Society Initiative to photograph palliative care in Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa. My assignment for this George Soros project was to try to show how Hospice care workers were making a difference. Extreme poverty, hunger and illness did not lesson the dignity of those who were dying. Equally impressive was the commitment of those bringing comfort and attempting to relieve pain.
